For the longest time I didn’t have to worry about doing laundry. I would do it at my moms house, or if I was short on time, she would do it for me. Well. My mom sold her house. So until she finds another one, I have two options here. Go to the laundromat, or figure out how to do it at home without a washer or dryer. Well, For some things I do use the laundromat for, no problem! But then there are things that I could just as easily wash at home, and thus spending less time and quarters at the laundromat. By learning how to do laundry at home, you can save unwanted time at the laundromat.

You will need:
  • Sink or tub
  • laundry soap
  • Water

First things first, you want to get your water to warm/lukewarm temp, and start filling tub or sink up with the soap and water. After wards, get your desired clothes and soak them in the tub of soapy water for 5-10 minutes. I normally wash everything but jeans and blankets in the sink. Once the clothes have soaked, grab the material while still in the water, and work it around for a bit, rinsing it out afterwords, while ringing out all the extra water. Once that’s done, just find a good place to hang it up to dry. I used my fence up until my husband built me a clothes line.

Now, I know, there are a lot of new manual washing machines, and I’ve thought about getting them on multiple occasions. But for many people with 2 kids or more, $150-$200 is a lot of money. Money that could be used to buy diapers, wipes, or extra groceries. So I am so glad I’ve found a way I can still wash my clothes that doesn’t require any extra equipment. Now I will say that it does take some time, unless you can get a rhythm going, where you have clothes soaking while you are rinsing out and hanging up another load. That’s what I try and do, as it seems like it gets done quicker that way.

Learning how to do laundry as our ancestors did is good. You never know when it could come in handy so its best to at least have a general idea on how to do it. And I’m not knocking those hand crank washing machines, and in fact, would like to get one or build one someday to be honest. Its just right now, I don’t have that option, and I can’t be the only person in this predicament. So maybe this could help you. Or someone you know and you could share it to them to help em out.
